Hours earlier, Laurent Saint-Cyr, president of the Presidential Transitional Council (CPT), transferred the mandate to Fils-Aime and confirmed the CPT’s dissolution, which had been created in April 2024 with the support of the United Nations (UN).
Fils-Aime affirmed that all state institutions would organize inclusive elections and hand power to leaders “freely elected” by the Haitian people. He asserted that his administration would reclaim every occupied area “until children could attend school without fear.”
His administration will confront the armed gangs, which control 90% of the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, main highways, and other areas. He added that the National Police and the Armed Forces will act rigorously and in coordination, “without rest or respite.”
Created in 2024 with the support of the United Nations, the CPT was tasked with holding elections, pacifying the country, and improving the economy. However, it was unable to meet its deadlines due to the prevailing insecurity in the country.
Fils-Aime acknowledged the CPT’s efforts and noted that the transition remains incomplete, reiterating that the mission is to restore security in Haiti and organize elections.
The Haitian Prime Minister, who counts on the support of the United States, expressed his willingness to participate in political dialogues “guided by the national interest” and emphasized the need to act with firmness and clarity.
